Online business models have always been in a state of flux, and the models that will be successful this year will likely be quite different from those that succeeded in the past. To help you determine which models are likely to succeed in the near future, we’ve put together a list of some of the most popular business models along with their current financial performance and predictions on how they might fare in 2022. Check out our article to learn more about this exciting new field!
- Affiliate Marketing
Affiliate marketing is one of my favorite online business models. Basically, you receive a commission on products sold through an affiliate network that you have registered with. You also receive a small bonus every time a customer you referred makes a purchase. The best part about affiliate marketing is that it’s pretty passive—you can set it and forget it to build your brand and income slowly over time.
If you’re looking to make money online, one option you might want to consider is e-commerce. For those unfamiliar, e-commerce refers to businesses that sell their products and services online. The process of doing so can be overwhelming—from choosing what to sell, setting up an online storefront, figuring out payments, shipping … and that’s just scraping your surface!
- Membership Sites
Some platforms make it easy to set up membership sites, while others do not. Patreon is an example of a platform that makes it easy to build membership sites. Membership sites have proven highly profitable as people are willing to pay monthly subscription fees in order access premium content and participate in other offers such as ticketed events, private Facebook groups, and special deals and discounts.
- Membership Site Platforms
Helping users monetize their skills, whether that’s an on-demand pool of web developers or yoga instructors, is a popular business model. If you know how to set up a website and pair users with clients, try one of these membership platforms. They’re not easy to get off the ground—for example, it can take several years to generate enough cash from membership fees to cover costs—but they provide flexibility and income potential down the road.
- Mobile Games
Gamification is at an all-time high. Mobile gaming is one of the most popular forms of entertainment, raking in billions of dollars each year. As a result, more and more people are looking to get into mobile games development. It’s not hard to see why: mobile games can be played on-the-go, so you can fit them into your life when you have time—and they generate cash while they sit on your phone waiting for you to find a few spare minutes to play!
- Paid Surveys/Email Marketing
Not surprisingly, you’ll make more money doing paid surveys than email marketing. However, you need a fairly large pool of potential survey participants to be viable. While paid surveys aren’t our favorite way to make money fast, they are reliable and consistent if you have enough time and don’t mind doing repetitive tasks.
- Paid Writing/Copywriting Gigs
The world of freelance writing/copywriting has been growing at a rapid pace—and it’s one we expect to continue growing in. According to Hubspot, 84% of businesses are planning on creating more content in 2022, and 60% plan on creating more video content. If you have writing or copywriting skills, now is a great time to make yourself an option for local businesses looking to create engaging marketing pieces.
- Premium Services/Software Solutions
The online freelance economy is booming and will continue to grow over 2022. In order to stay relevant in a world where anyone can hire a virtual assistant, you need to find your niche within a growing market. If you’re looking to become an expert in digital marketing, focus on your experience and sell that knowledge to businesses looking for a boost. Focus on platforms like Fiverr and Upwork as they are starting points—not end-all solutions.
- Subscription Boxes
Why? Let’s face it, we live in a society of instant gratification. Some might argue that part of what’s made subscription boxes so popular is their ability to scratch an instant gratification itch. The most basic definition of a subscription box is a periodic delivery of surprise products tailored to your taste and interests. That being said, almost every industry now has some sort of subscription model whether or not they actually deliver products right to your door step.
